My Visions for Thurston County
My name is Jackie Jo Reid and I am a contender in the 2008 election for Thurston County Commissioner, Position 2.
My motto is: “Let’s put ‘service’ back into public service.”
Here are some visions I have for Thurston County:
1. Property Taxes. The 1% limit is a good thing but property assessments are out of control. Im already starting to look into the process and what changes we might be able to enact.
The existing process is so complicated that the county has to set down with each resident separately to explain the basis for their assessment. Of course you must contact the County to have this process explained to you.
Seems like a waste of time and tax payer’s money to me. Everyone needs to know how much their property taxes will be; some kind of cap must be established. This is a priority.
2. Why do most of the jobs go to Pierce or King County?
What are those counties doing that Thurston County is not? My vision is to put Thurston County on the map as the green county. We need to encourage these types of businesses to move here. More local jobs mean less commuting which saves fuel and the environment.
3. We need to keep more open spaces and a lot more green for ourselves, our children, and the planet. One way would be to require developers to provide these on a greater scale than currently mandated. Open spaces invite relaxation, better health, peace of mind, and a happier planet.
Perhaps a general review of the existing land use plan would benefit all of us.
4. In a world that is rapidly changing, we must be ready to meet those changes. Emergency services is no longer an “if”, but “when”. These bastions of public service will require long-range strategic planning in the event of a natural disaster, as will individuals and their families.
