ROY SALMON HOMECOMING THIS SATURDAY

Salmon Coming to Roy, Come and Greet Them!

ROY Come welcome the chum salmon home as they make their way up Muck Creek this year!

The annual Roy Salmon Homecoming hosted by the Nisqually Indian Tribe and the City of Roy will be held on Saturday, January 22 from 10:00 a.m. To 1:30 p.m. at the Roy City Park. This years homecoming will feature displays on salmon and salmon restoration, educational activities, and speakers from organizations involved in salmon restoration. Hot drinks, soup, smoked salmon and baked goods will also be provided.

Cooperation across communities is essential for salmon recovery, said David Troutt, natural resources director for the Nisqually Tribe. Roy is a great example of people coming together for salmon. The resurgent chum salmon runs in Roy during the last few years are a result of what can happen when we work together.

The Nisqually Indian Tribe, Fort Lewis, the Pierce Stream Team and other local groups in recent years have collaborated on habitat restoration projects along Muck Creek. The partners have planted native trees and plants, decommissioned an old road along Muck Creek, removed invasive reed canary grass, and added logs and stumps to a section of Muck Creek.

THE NATION PAUSES TO REMEMBER THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

THIS IS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THIS WEEKEND THE NATION PAUSES TO REMEMBER THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

“Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King’s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986,” quoting Wikipedia.

The Seattle Times has a fabulous expose on the civil rights giant.

Ms. Evans has always been proud to herald her connection to the Pacific Northwest & to Yelm wherever she goes, a true Ambassador for this region!

THURSTON HIGHLANDS –
THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING – MISERY THAT IS!

The Puget Sound Business Journal reports this morning:

“A Mercer Island couple has obtained an $18.2 million judgment against local lender Thomas Hazelrigg III in connection with a 5,000-home development that was planned for the city of Yelm, in Thurston County.

The massive mixed-use project, which foundered as the economic downturn froze credit and tanked the housing market, was recently sold at a foreclosure auction. Whether the project will go ahead as planned remains unclear….

…Project developer Paul Liao, who assembled the tract. Liao and his son Darwin retained a 49 percent stake in the project. But the project foundered in the economic downturn, as the developers struggled to obtain additional funding and secure sufficient water rights, according to Jacobson and city of Yelm officials. The Liao family was able to buy back the project in the foreclosure auction earlier this year.

However, Grant Beck, community development director for Yelm, said there remains a bill for $120,000 in city expenditures that will have to be paid before the project can continue through permitting….

It’s unclear when, if ever, the project will be restarted.”

ED. NOTE: The money owed in this project was outlined here May 7, 2009 with the public documents.
In this economic environment of continuing foreclosures & with today’s banking practices tightened-up, what bank is going to loan money if this project comes a-callin’ again?
After all, Thurston Highlands’ primary lending bank was seized by the FDIC and sold April 30th citing inadequate capital and severe loan losses associated with the bank’s construction loan portfolio.

9 + ACRE PARCEL ACROSS FROM WAL-MART UP FOR AUCTION

In the HMMMM department, comes news that this Yelm parcel is up for auction:

Photo courtesy: Williams & Williams Commercial Real Estate

“9.33+/- acre retail site located adjacent to a Walmart Supercenter and at the confluence of the future intersection of State Route 510 (Yelm Loop) and State Route (SR) 507. The site offers 500′ of frontage on SR 507 and is approximately 813′ deep. Currently, the property is situated directly south of the signalized intersection of SR 507 and the private drive neighboring Walmart (future access/exit point of SR 510). The land has immediate ingress/egress at the intersection. SR 507 is home to Yelm’s commercial district boasting traffic counts exceeding 19,000 vehicles per day…

The property is zoned Arterial Commercial AC, allowing commercial uses which are oriented toward vehicular traffic,” quoting Williams & Williams Commercial Real Estate.

Thurston County lists unpaid taxes for three years.

The Auction will take place:
11:00 AM PST Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Selling On Site and Online

Editors note:
Buyer beware!
– Will the city have enough water connections to connect this property or any subdivisions the new buyer might consider to the city’s water resources? That is questionable right now.
– The Bypass extension is planned to bisect this property in the future. What will the value be of the smaller property left after that (see picture above)?
– The Auctioneer uses the growth here as a selling point for a prospective buyer:
“Due to continued growth, the city of Yelm proactively works to attract big box retailers, national tenants and businesses to support the community.”
Unless the city gets more water rights from Ecology and water connections from Health, growth in Yelm will be hindered.

Yet, the city must engage mandatory water irrigation on local businesses to obtain enough water for more water connections, i.e. growth!

“WILCOX SWORN IN AS NEW 2ND DISTRICT…REP.”

Photo credit: Mr. Wilcox’s 2010 campaign website

The State Column reports:

“With his proud family and friends watching, J.T. Wilcox, R-Yelm, Monday [Jan. 10] swore to: ‘uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, the Constitution and laws of the State of Washington, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of a Washington State Representative to the best of my ability.’

…Anxious to get to work, Wilcox brings his family farm work ethic to the job and is committed to finding a way to balancing a nearly $6 billion budget shortfall.

Wilcox will serve on four House committees:

Agriculture and Natural Resources (he will serve as assistant ranking Republican)…

Ways and Means …

Education…

General Government Appropriations and Oversight…

‘The challenges our state faces will require us to work together to find solutions that protect taxpayers, job creators and the most vulnerable in our communities,’ Wilcox said.”

This was a bittersweet day for Rep. Wilcox, as his mother’s funeral was Saturday, Jan. 8th, according to the Nisqually Valley News Obit.

THE YELM COMMUNITY BLOG CONGRATULATES REP. WILCOX & LOOKS FORWARD TO REPORTING HIS INVOLVEMENT ON IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ISSUES AFFECTING THIS AREA.
