“Red Flag Fire Warning” for Puget Sound

From the National Weather Service:

URGENT – FIRE WEATHER MESSAGE

823 AM PDT SAT AUG 18 2012

RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT THIS
EVENING FOR THUNDERSTORMS AND DRY FUELS FOR FIRE WEATHER ZONES
605…606…607…608 AND 660…

* AFFECTED AREA…[Includes all of Puget Sound]
Click here for map.

* THUNDERSTORMS…
THE THUNDERSTORM THREAT WILL CONTINUE TODAY AS ISOLATED TO SCATTERED STORMS MOVE NORTH ACROSS THE AREA. THE THUNDERSTORM THREAT WILL DECREASE FROM THE SOUTH THIS EVENING.

* IMPACTS…

THUNDERSTORMS WITH LIMITED RAINFALL TODAY WILL INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF FIRE STARTS. GIVEN THAT FUELS ARE CURRENTLY VERY DRY ANY FIRES THAT DO START WILL HAVE AN INCREASED POTENTIAL FOR EXPLOSIVE GROWTH. ADDITIONALLY…THUNDERSTORMS WILL LIKELY BE ACCOMPANIED BY GUSTY AND ERRATIC WINDS CAUSING LESS PREDICTABLE FIRE BEHAVIOR.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW…OR WILL SHORTLY. A COMBINATION OF LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND SIGNIFICANT SURFACE INSTABILITY WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL.
