Other changes: Elementary school will add a walk-to-Read program, middle school will implement the Compassionate Schools Program that focusses on a positive school environment and the high school will reinstate the Traffic Safety Program and expand the online Rainier Virtual Academy.

YELM COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

School starts: Tuesday.
School ends: June 13.
2012-13 general fund budget: About $47.9 million.
Administration changes: Southworth Elementary School principal Lisa Cadero-Smith was hired as director of teaching and learning. Charles Cook was hired as the new principal at Southworth. He is the former principal of Harrah Elementary School in the Mount Adams School District near Yakima. Stewart Tucker was hired as the new supervisor of maintenance, grounds and custodial.
Other changes: The school district has begun a multi-year initiative to implement Marzano Instructional Framework a program that will help create a common language of teaching and learning, with the goal of improving student achievement, superintendent Andy Wolf said. Teachers will be trained on how to write effective instructional goals, track student progress and engage students in the learning process, he said. The district also has a new Support Operations Center scheduled to be complete by December or January.
