“Update on plastic bag legislation in Thurston County” –
Public Hearing Sept. 24

From Thurston County Solid Waste:
A group of local stakeholders completed draft ordinance language that would eliminate plastic carryout bags and place a fee on paper bags. The draft has been provided to all jurisdictions in Thurston County for their consideration. Read the official news release here.

Each local government will determine if it wants to proceed with the adoption process, which would require a public hearing.

To date, the Tumwater City Council and the Thurston County Board of Commissioners (for the unincorporated areas of the county) have scheduled hearings.

Tumwater hearing:
7:30 p.m., Tues, Sept 17
City Council Chambers
555 Israel Rd. SW, Tumwater

Thurston County hearing:
5:30 p.m., Tues, Sept 24
County courthouse complex, Building 1, Room 280
2000 Lakeridge Dr. SW

The model ordinance language, the schedule of public hearings, and the a final report about the project, Reducing Our Use: Plastic Shopping Bags, are available on our plastics information website.
