“The Thurston County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance Tuesday that will ban the use of most plastic carryout bags in unincorporated Thurston County starting next July 1.

‘You know, weve been grappling with this issue for more than two years, with industry experts and citizens and a whole host of stakeholders,’ Thurston County Commission Chairwoman Sandra Romero said. ‘But the fact is, the costs of trying to manage plastic film are mounting, and the environmental damage is mounting. This ordinance is our best chance to get a handle on the problems our community faces with plastic bags,'” quoting Q13 FOX-TV reporter Tina Patel.

“From 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 24-27, flaggers will reduce SR 510 to one alternating lane of traffic between Yelm Highway and Reservation Road.
Traffic backups are expected to be longer than previously experienced, and motorists are advised to plan for delays up to 20 minutes. This work is weather sensitive and rain could delay or postpone the work.

Ashley Sanders, a Move to Amend national spokesperson

Rainer resident and former Rainier School Board member Mike Savoca reports to the Yelm Community Blog that he has formed a local chapter of the national organization Move to Amend.

“Move to Amend is a national coalition of nearly 300,000 people and organizations whose goal is to amend the US Constitution to end corporate rule and get money out of politics,” quoting their website.

Savoca says this group, “is fighting the huge influence of multinational corporations “buying” our government with huge, disguised political campaign donations and spending by Super PACs and 501(c)4 organizations.”

He says, “We got a bill through the state house but failed in the state senateultimately we have to amend the US Constitution because the U.S Supreme Court ruled that a corporation is a person, and money is free speech and can no longer be regulated, so all the campaign finance laws that applied to corporations were thrown out the window.”

Savoca urges, “people to attend a meeting on Friday September 27th, 6:30pm at the Thurston County Office-Courthouse complex to hear the national spokesperson, Ashley Sanders discuss and have an exchange with supporters of what supporters of this issue can pursue.”

“Ashley Sanders’ presentation “Organizing to End Corporate Rule & Get Money Out of Politics” outlines the history of the American Constitution as it pertains to Corporate Personhood and illegitimate but legal corporate constitutional rights. It will be followed by a facilitated discussion session and Q&A. Sanders aims to help local folks understand how they can work to abolish corporate personhood and establish a government truly of, by, and for the people,” quoting the website.

“Compulsory patriotism does nothing for soldiers who risk their lives — but props up those who profit from war”

“In recent years Ive grown fatigued of appeals on behalf of the troops, which intensify in proportion to the belligerence or potential unpopularity of the imperial adventure du jour.”

“A nation that continuously publicizes appeals to ‘support our troops’ is explicitly asking its citizens not to think. It is the ideal slogan for suppressing the practice of democracy, presented to us in the guise of democratic preservation.”

“I returned to the car, wondering if it will ever be possible to escape the inveterate branding of war as a civic asset in the United States.”

…”corporations care far less about the individuals who happen to have served in the military than they do about the troops as an exploitable consumer category. Unthinking patriotism, exemplified by support of the troops (however insincere or self-serving), is an asset to the modern business model, not simply for good P.R., but also for the profit it generates.”

Who, for instance, are the troops?
Do they include those safely on bases in Hawaii and Germany?
Those guarding and torturing prisoners at Bagram and Guantnamo?
The ones who murder people by remote control?
The legions of mercenaries in Iraq?
The ones Ive seen many times in the Arab world acting like an Adam Sandler character?
The troops traverse vast sociological, geographical, economic and ideological categories.
It does neither military personnel nor their fans any good to romanticize them as a singular organism.”
