Yelm budget hearing tonight – do citizens really care?
They should, because the Budget has over $2 million
for a voter-rejected Community Center!

Yelm Public Safety Building & City Council Chambers

The Yelm City Council will conclude a Public Hearing tonight on the 2014 city budget and then vote to approve. At the first Public Hearing November 26, no one commented.

“Highlights of the 2014 Budget include:
“Future Community Center, Mosman intersection realignment construction, continued effort to obtain funding for Phase 2 of the SR 510 Yelm Loop, SW Yelm Well 1A engineering of treatment system and reservoir; water rights mitigation projects associated with Deschutes River Farm, AC water line replacement projects, Cochrane Park wetland rehabilitation and Sewer Capital Facilities Plan,” quoting the Staff Report.

SHOULDN’T THE PUBLIC BE ASKING WHY MONEY FOR A COMMUNITY CENTER IS INCLUDED IN THE BUDGET, WHEN THE PARK BOND DID NOT MEET THE THRESHOLD FOR PASSING IN TWO BALLOTS EARLIER THIS YEAR?

Why does the city’s 2014 budget now have over over $2 million dollars budgeted for
– Community center Operations & Maintenance = $50,000
– Community Center Design = $150,000
– Community Center Construction Management = $150,000
– Community Center Construction = $1,768,250

II ADDITION: In 2014, the City of Yelm has $133,900 earmarked to service the $2 million Library/Community Center GO Bond debt.
One million dollars of the $2 million Library/Community Center GO Bond was from adding $1 million for a Community Center to the $1 million Library Bond, the additional $1 million never presented to the public for their considerations and approval.

Is this a work-around from the public rejection of the proposition?
