On this 215 anniversary of the birth of one of our greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, the City of Yelm is faced with Mayor Harding’s State of the City address today that will be all spin, for the actions coming out of his City Hall defy logic in placing the public interests of his constituents behind politics, unlike Mr. Lincoln, who stood for ALL of his people!
With a very high profile front-page story in the Nisqually Valley News (NVN) and Triad Arts Theater Flier heralding participation by Emergency Management personal from Pierce & Thurston Counties and the City of Yelm for the “Volcanoes & Earthquakes Preparation Roundtable,” the question was asked by a participant last night why a Yelm representative was not in attendance. The response was they no-showed [Police Chief Stancil withdrew a few hours prior to the session].
Event sponsor Steve Craig placed an empty chair on-stage marked with a large sign, “City of Yelm”
along with the other participants and pointed out that no city rep. showed, after Police Chief Stancil committed to being on the docket, as Yelm’s Emergency Management Representative.
The chair stayed empty all night in front of everyone.
There was a wide cross-section of folks attending with a standing-room only crowd, the largest I have EVER seen at this theater.
Clearly, as Mr. Harding told then-NVN Editor in September 2005, he will hold NO Public Forum in Yelm where there will be a Q & A session. On completing 2 terms as mayor, he has fulfilled that pledge.
Did HE order Police Chief Stancil’s last minute withdrawal? hmmmm.
Now, the third term with this mayor clearly started out with a “black-eye” last night, with no one from the City of Yelm attending this community public-interest event, co-sponsored by the NVN, RSE & Ronelle Funk (Chamber President). This no-show was a slap in the face of real advancement for good of all of the area
And, the City Council meeting adjourned at 6:43pm, easily enough time for one of the city’s reps in attendance there to drive the 3 blocks to The Triad Theater and arrive by 7pm:
7 City Council members
4 City Staff
WHY DOES POLITICS FROM THE CITY OF YELM ALL-WAYS TRUMP THE PUBLIC INTERESTS?
MR. HARDING, YOUR ‘STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS’ WAS OVERSHADOWED BY YOUR CITY’S LACK OF PARTICIPATION IN A PUBLIC SAFETY INFORMATIONAL EVENT HELD ACROSS FROM CITY HALL!
WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR A QUAKE TO HIT OUR AREA BEFORE CITY OFFICIALS PULL TOGETHER WITH ALL?
THIS IS THE ‘STATE OF THE CITY’ TODAY!
Mr. Harding has made clear he has ambitions for higher public office.
He’s going to have to make some changes in his public persona and accessibility to get voters to take him seriously in the rural areas of the County surrounding Yelm, where voters know his modus-operandi well.
