Yelm’s Proclamation: Nisqually Land Trust Day –
September 23

Interestingly, the Yelm City Council issued a Proclamation at their 6pm meeting for Nisqually Land Trust Day on Tuesday, September 23, when the day was almost concluded, hmmm.

Land Trust Executive Director Joe Kane accepted the Proclamation from Mayor Ron Harding and acknowledged Yelm being pivotal for 25 years in the organization’s development, as well as the Yelm City Council being represented on the Land Trust’s Board with President JW Foster.
While nice and long overdue, yet how could the public celebrate this Proclamation of and on September 23, without any advanced notification?

Click here for the Proclamation from the Yelm City Council’s Agenda.

“ALGAE ADVISORY POSTED FOR CLEAR LAKE”

“Swimmers, pet owners and anglers advised to avoid contact”
“A blue-green algae bloom in Clear Lake near Yelm has recently produced enough toxin to prompt an advisory for the lake that is now in effect. Swimming in water with algae toxins or drinking it can lead to serious illness, so people and pets are advised to stay out of the water at Clear Lake, and anglers are reminded that the safest bet during a toxic algae bloom is to catch and release,” quoting a Thurston County News Release.

Petition the President to oppose GMO crops

“Demand the President step in & oppose EPAs approval of the New 2,4-D resistant Genetically Engineered Crops!”

“In signing this petition, I am urging the President to deny the EPAs approval of the 2,4-D and glyphosate herbicide combination developed by Dow Chemical Company. This mix of chemical herbicides known as Enlist Duo would mean an additional hundred million pounds of chemicals will be used to produce corn and soybeans across the country, putting families, children and the environments health at risk. Communities living downwind of fields and thousands of schools within 200 feet of corn and soybean fields are at risk of inhaling the new Enlist Duo herbicide. Exposure to the chemical 2,4-D is linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, thyroid & reproductive problems, Parkinsons disease and neurological damage. Do not allow the EPA to approve this highly toxic herbicide mix.”

iPhone 6 disrupts NSA investigative abilities

“Signaling Post-Snowden Era, New iPhone Locks Out N.S.A.”
“The phone encrypts emails, photos and contacts based on a complex mathematical algorithm that uses a code created by, and unique to, the phones user and that Apple says it will not possess.

The result, the company is essentially saying, is that if Apple is sent a court order demanding that the contents of an iPhone 6 be provided to intelligence agencies or law enforcement, it will turn over gibberish, along with a note saying that to decode the phones emails, contacts and photos, investigators will have to break the code or get the code from the phones owner.”

‘Eliminating the iPhone as one source I dont think is going to wreck a lot of cases,’ he said [Jonathan Zdziarski, a security researcher]. ‘There is such a mountain of other evidence from call logs, email logs, iCloud, Gmail logs. Theyre tapping the whole Internet,” quoting David E. Sanger and Brian X. Chen, the New York Times.

FDA’s “flawed” imported cheese restrictions

“No more Morbier? It’s a possibility.”
Photo credit: George Wilhelm / Los Angeles Times

“Los Angeles cheese counters [and Puget Sound’s] could soon be a lot less aromatic, with several popular cheeses falling victim to a more zealous U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Roquefort Frances top-selling blue is in the agencys cross hairs along with raw-milk versions of Morbier, St. Nectaire and Tomme de Savoie.

In early August, these cheeses and many more landed on an FDA Import Alert because the agency found bacterial counts that exceeded its tolerance level. Cheeses on Import Alert cant be sold in the U.S. until the producer documents corrective action and five samples test clean, a process that can take months.

Of course, French creameries havent changed their recipes for any of these classic cheeses. But their wheels are flunking now because the FDA has drastically cut allowances for a typically harmless bacterium by a factor of 10.

The limits for nontoxigenic E. coli were cut from 100 MPN (most probable number) per gram to 10 MPN. These are bacteria that live in every human gut; they are typically harmless and we coexist happily. But the FDA considers them a marker for sanitation: If a cheese shows even modest levels of nontoxigenic E. coli, the facility that produced it must be insufficiently clean.

Dennis DAmico, an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut whose specialty is dairy microbiology, says this premise is flawed,” quoting Janet Fletcher, Los Angeles Times.

In the News – Harrison Quadruplets at Yelm High

“Two of the four Harrison quadruplets are playing tennis for
Yelm High School this year” – Cole (left) and Hunter Harrison,

“Theyve become a familiar scene at Yelm.

Theres grandma, Donna Harrison, sitting on her folding chair, cheering at a Yelm High School tennis match, soccer game or cross-country meet. Theres also mom, Deanna Harrison, cheering.

And, of course, there are the four Harrisons, the quadruplets with game. Cierra plays soccer. Mason runs cross country. Hunter and Cole play tennis.”

“Theyre the miracle babies. Premature, they weighed one to two pounds at birth. They were born at 27 weeks, not enough time to fully develop. Deannas doctor asked her not to announce her childrens birth because they were so small and he wasnt sure theyd survive.

But, now, 15 years later, theyre all healthy, living up to the name of being a Harrison,” by Gail Wood in Thurston Talk.
