– From Renee Duff, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist:
“December will begin with a roar across the Northwest as rounds of rain, mountain snow and even ice are in store this week.

Rounds of storms are poised to impact Washington, Oregon and northern California with rain beginning on Monday and continuing off and on through Friday.

Snow and ice are also possible across central portions of Washington and Oregon during the middle part of the week.

This stormy pattern follows a week-long dry stretch for much of the area.

On Monday, the first of three storms will work its way into the coast, bringing light rain from Seattle to Redding, California.

While the morning commute looks dry, anyone returning home from work later in the day could encounter wet roads.”

Editor’s note:
The black ice on morning and evening roads, overnight lows in the low 20’s, dense morning fog, and air stagnation advisories will be gone however, as overnight low temperatures with the cloud-cover will be in the low 40’s here this week.

From Rep. Denny Heck: “Save Our Sound”

– This is an important issue, as highlighted by Rep. Denny Heck in his e-mailer: “Save Our Sound”
“Puget Sound is a deceptive wonder. Its haunting beauty obscures the slow-flowing poison of urban runoff and the lowering of pH from ocean acidification. The result imperils shellfish and marine life. The jewel of Western Washington, Puget Sound is at risk” (October 9th, Seattle Times).

As a Washingtonian, you understand the value of our Puget Sound. It’s an important environmental and economic resource for our entire region and preserving our Sound for future generations is an effort deserving of support.

Unfortunately, Puget Sound is gift that we are in danger of losing if we don’t act. Despite advancements in stormwater protection, industrial practices, and habitat restoration, the damage is outpacing the rate of recovery. We must work together to save our Sound.

Will you add your name to our effort to save Puget Sound?

I have teamed up with my colleague Derek Kilmer to introduce the PUGET SOS Act in the US House of Representatives. The Promoting United Government Efforts To Save Our Sound (PUGET SOS) Act is legislation crafted in partnership with Tribal, State, and local partners and will:

* Integrate and align Federal restoration efforts with the ongoing recovery work of Tribal, State, and local governments;

* Ensure the Federal-Tribal trust responsibility is upheld;

* Supply Federal funding to help restore habitat, mitigate stormwater runoff, and help shellfish recovery; and

* Prioritize Puget Sound recovery in a way that is commensurate with its national significance.

Investing in Puget Sound isn’t just about saving our environment. It’s about people, too. It’s about clean water to drink, healthy food to eat, a stable economy, protecting Tribal treaty rights, being resilient to climate change and flooding, and an endless number of quality-of-life benefits.

Thankfully, folks are taking notice. Our bill has garnered bipartisan co-sponsorship and recently received the endorsement of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. We have also received the support of the Nature Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife and the Washington Environmental Council.

Please join our effort to save our Sound. Add your name as a citizen co-sponsor today and help us restore the health of Puget Sound for future generations.

I appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Denny Heck

P.S. Our Puget Sound is an environmental and economic resource we can’t afford to lose; preserving it for future generations is a responsibility we all share. If you agree, add your name as a citizen co-sponsor today.

Consumer Food Waste and Loss –
A pertinent topic after Thanksgiving Day

Image: Food check via Shutterstock

– “If Everybody Hates Wasting Food, Why Do We Do It and How Can We Stop?”
“Like it or not, when it comes to food waste, it’s not just industrial farms or supermarkets or restaurants or caterers or other people who are to blame: It’s all of us. In fact, according to The Wall Street Journal, more than twice as much food is wasted at the consumer level than at the retail level in the US,” by Mary Hoff, Ensia.

– “Innovative Approaches to Solving the Massive Food Waste Problem”
“Americans discard 34 million tons of food every year — that’s like tossing a quarter of your groceries into the trash. Nearly half of all food grown in 2013 was thrown away, while 49 million Americans experienced “food insecurity” and hunger.1

The food waste problem is not limited to America’s home kitchens but also occurs in restaurants, grocery stores, and on farms.

A 2013 report entitled “Global Food: Waste Not, Want Not”2 by the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) found that more than 2 billion tons of food are wasted annually.

It reports that up to 30 percent of perfectly good vegetables are not harvested simply because they aren’t pretty. Thirty to 50 percent of the 4 billion tons of food produced around the world each year never reaches a human mouth.

Food Forward TV episode “Make Food, Not Waste” explores this massive problem of food waste and features a few innovative individuals and organizations who are transforming organic scraps into an ecological goldmine,” by Dr. Mercola.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Yelm Community Blog!

This Thanksgiving Day message was first published here in 2009:

THANKSGIVING DAY has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863 & became a federal holiday in 1941.
President Lincoln issued this proclamation which set the precedent for Americas national day of Thanksgiving on October 3rd, 1863, which is as pertinent today as during the Civil War to heal our nation’s wounds:

By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore.

Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

William H. Seward,
Secretary of State
