Yelm Reading Buddies Program desires to expand to Rainier

– United Way’s Reading Buddies program a “great success” in Yelm, wants to expand to Rainier
Reading Buddies has been a great success at Fort Stevens Elementary in Yelm. Local Leader Sara Steinberg tells the Yelm Community Blog, “It’s been so rewarding to witness the ‘lightbulb moments’ the children I’ve been working with, a first-grade girl and second-grade boy, have experienced as we read together.”

One by one, Reading Buddies will extend the program to the other four Yelm elementary schools and Steinberg will continue to help recruit Yelm-area volunteers. She is now seeking help to find one or more local leaders in Rainier who can recruit Reading Buddies for Rainier Elementary School, to introduce this wonderful program to the Rainier community. – Will You Help Rainier Children Learn to Read?
By 3rd grade, children who still struggle to read are 4 times less likely to graduate from high school. United Way’s Reading Buddy volunteers spend 1 hour per week at elementary schools, giving individual attention to youngsters who need help to practice reading. (Locally, Reading Buddies is a project of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Lewis, Mason, and Thurston Counties.) Can you help us recruit volunteer Reading Buddies to serve at Rainier Elementary School?

My name is Sara Steinberg, and as a Yelm local leader, I recruited Reading Buddies to get this program started at Fort Stevens Elementary, Yelm. Now we’re coordinating with Rainier Elementary School to start the program there by this fall—that part is covered.

But we need one or more local leaders to recruit Reading Buddies in the Rainier area. This merely involves setting up a time and place when Rainier residents can come hear Jennifer Thompson, RB Program Coordinator, introduce the program to the community and answer questions.

Here’s a link to a 5-minute YouTube video about the program. (If you can’t view the video, I can come to Rainier and show it to you on my laptop. You can reach me at 360-458-0954 or call/text my cell, 360-960-0744, or email steinberg_editorial_services@yahoo.com)

Jennifer Thompson will be happy to meet with Rainier-area leaders, either individually or in groups, to explain the program. Interested networkers may email Jennifer directly at jthompson@unitedway-thurston.org; her phone is 360-943-2773 ext. 121.
