“Homelessness Task Force Prepares to Bring Recommendations and Final Report to Council”
- Editor’s note: After a spate of incorrect and incendiary e-mails and Facebook posts circulated in our community incriminating to the Homelessness Task Force’s council leaders, recommendations and a report are now going to the full council. The mayor said the rumors, innuendoes and hearsay about the Task Force were baseless, yet the harsh vitriol towards Councilors Carmody and DePinto that continued I found to be irrepressible!
From the City of Yelm:
“After the most recent Homelessness Task Force meeting on Oct. 15, Molly Carmody, a City Councilmember and Co-Chair of the Yelm Homelessness Task Force, announced the advisory group had convened for the last time. Their last meeting ended with several initial recommendations, while lots of work on the details and analysis remains to be completed before proposals are brought forward for Council consideration.
“The seven recommendations are as follows: A monthly clinic at the Yelm Community Center for service providers, establishing a permanent homelessness commission, increase law enforcement, review City ordinances, work with local nonprofits to provide services, temporarily open the Community Center as a shelter during hazardous weather, and to create a jobs program.”
“Next, a few members of the Task Force will finalize the recommendations by completing a report that is specified in the resolution and includes the following details and analysis: a comprehensive list of current services in Yelm, an analysis of gaps and overlaps in service, a code review of other jurisdictions, and a summary of the Thurston County Housing Plan. City staff will then review and evaluate the estimated cost and feasibility of each proposal.”
“In the meantime, community members who would like to participate in the discussion or ask questions are encouraged to email the Homelessness Task Force Co-Chairs through the City Council Contact Form.”
