All about becoming the change you wish to see in the world – now and local
From Mary Beth Harrington, CVA in The JOLT News:
Have you ever wanted to ‘make a difference? Well, you get that opportunity every year! Make a Difference Day is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of October, which is Saturday, October 22, and is all about becoming the change you wish to see in the world. Every year, thousands of individuals come together to volunteer, raise funds, offer support, and learn about the most urgent needs in our society. Over 20 years ago, Make a Difference Day was sponsored by USA Weekend (a supplement to USA Today) and the Points of Light Foundation. While neither organization sponsors the event now, Points of Lights still celebrates individuals that are making a difference.
Join the Washington Make a Difference Day Cleanup
On Saturday, October 22, communities across Washington will come together at locally organized clean-ups to make a dent in our growing waste problem and learn how to take action to improve our recycling systems to move towards a plastic-free future! Here in Thurston County, our OlySurfrider chapter will host a cig butt cleanup, education, and activities in partnership with Pacific Shellfish Institute and Thurston County Master Recycler Composter Program beginning at Stellar Juices in Downtown Olympia. Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots activist network, and chapters like the one in Olympia are comprised of passionate volunteers working towards their vision of 100% coastal protection.
