Yelm Dollars for Scholars Aims to Set Youth Up For Future
The Yelm Dollars for Scholars program has raised and distributed over $2.5 million in scholarships to Yelm High School graduates since 1991.
The program holds many fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for their scholarships, which are open to all graduates in Yelm. The scholarships are awarded based on merit.
“It is very important to have a program like this because it is a long standing tradition that brings our community together in supporting the Yelm graduating senior class,” Yelm Dollar for Scholars President Dan Huttmann said. “It truly shows what a great community we live in.”
Huttmann added those in the program don’t need to have a senior student of their own.
“They just want to give back to a great cause for all kids,” Huttmann said. “It is very important to the students because it is a scholarship that is student centered. It is also important to the students because it is the one scholarship opportunity that is for all Yelm students looking to further their education. This can be through college or trade school.”
Scholarships are awarded on a weighted scale of academic achievement, goal-setting, community and school involvement, and an interactive “professional-style” interview of each applicant. Students can apply for scholarships by creating a student profile online at yelm.dollarsforscholars.org.
