Thurston County Sheriff back in uniform after crash with suspected DUI driver

Excerpt from KOMO-4 TV, Seattle:

Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders returned to the office Thursday for the first time since being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

Sanders was involved in a collision in Yelm after the driver of a pickup truck traveling eastbound pulled out in front of him.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near Lawrence Lake Road Southeast and 153rd Avenue Southeast on Sunday, April 2.

“I just feel fortunate that I don’t have any serious injuries that will keep me from coming back and making full recovery,” Sanders said. “After talking to the medics and having those conversations, it’s like, thank you so much for making sure I was ok.”

Sanders is cleared to work but still has a concussion.

Doctors said he can work two hours a day for the next two weeks but is not allowed to respond to 911 calls or be on patrol.
