Yelm’s council to discuss tonight a $10 million YMCA bond for Nov. ballot – 3 months prior to another schools levy

  • Editor’s note: What makes this city council think that the voters will approve a $10M construction bond for a Yelm YMCA facility?
  • The November ballot for this bond, if the council approves, comes 3 months prior to the next schools levy vote.
  • What are the maintenance costs the city will bear, for those are taxpayer funds, too?
  • If this goes to a public vote and fails, what is the plan that will follow?
  • In April 2014, Mayor Harding’s council did an end-run around 2 failed public votes for a community center, and voted to use Yelm taxpayer money anyway. Would this council so the same?

Yelm City Council Agenda tonight has a $10M bond Resolution for the Nov. ballot

This is not a vote for the bond tonight, which is projected to be on July 23rd.

For Tuesday night’s council session:

Resolution No. 648
A Resolution of the City of Yelm, Washington, providing for the submission to the qualified electors of
the City of Yelm, at the November 5, 2024 General Election, a proposition asking qualified voters to
approve a construction bond, not to exceed $10,000,000 over 28 years.

[From council member Hess: Tonight we are just doing the first reading of the resolution and no action is to be taken. The next meeting we will read it again and then take action. According to the Mayor during July’s study session, if the voters vote no then we will honor their vote and no longer discuss or pursue the YMCA in Yelm.]
