Make your way through the rugged coast of Washington for mountain views and lush forest drives. You can start in Seattle and loop around Puget Sound, stopping for ferry boat detours to Vashon Island or Whidbey Island. On Maury Island, stroll along the beaches or visit Point Robinson Lighthouse for a taste of Pacific Northwest island life. Back on the mainland, hike or camp in Olympic National Park, and then carry on to historic Port Townsend, where you can wander among the old waterfront neighborhoods or head out on the water in the hopes of spotting orcas, sea otters, and other marine life.
As Yelm develops our biennial budget for the next two years, one promise that I have always kept (with council support) was to not raise your property tax the 1% that is allowed without a vote of the people. Each year my administration has presented council with a balanced budget that does not take the 1% increase and this year will be the same.

While every jurisdiction around us has utilized that 1% increase, Yelm has been in a unique position of constant growth and does not require levying that increase. Each year we present a fiscally conservative budget with substantial increases to road maintenance, public safety, as well as adding to our rainy day funds. I’m optimistic that council will support no tax increases as they have these past 5 years along with a proposed water bill reduction.

McClatchy Media hit its newsrooms nationwide with significant layoffs on Thursday, with some newspapers gutted by a third of their staff.
The layoffs came just months after the company’s push into AI with a controversial editorial tool that led to widespread revolt among staffers, as previously reported by TheWrap.
The 168-year-old newspaper owner houses Pulitzer Prize-winning local outlets like the Bee, the Miami Herald and the Charlotte Observer, among many others. In an internal memo to staff first shared publicly by the New York Times’ Katie Robertson, management said that an internal analysis found that consumer revenue declined 41% while local news expenses remained flat.
McClatchy cuts more than 90 staff in its most severe layoffs in years
At least 13 papers — including The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee and The Kansas City Star — lost reporters
“McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve,” the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, which represents McClatchy journalists in Idaho and Washington, said in a statement. “That is a model that is destined to fail.”
The layoffs are part of a companywide restructuring, according to a notice McClatchy gave to the Pacific Media Workers Guild, which represents journalists at three McClatchy California papers.

But several people said that Thursday’s layoffs were the most brutal in more than seven years. The Charlotte Observer lost nearly a quarter of its newsroom, according to The Charlotte Ledger. The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild reported losing a third of unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune, Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald.

Sessions may be added throughout the coming weeks. Any changes to the session schedule will be posted on TRL’s levy webpage at trl.org/levy.
Regular library services will not be available during sessions held outside a library’s regular service hours. These locations will be open for the levy information sessions only.
All sessions are open to the public. Community members may attend any session that is convenient for them.
The TRL Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday, July 22, to run a ballot proposal asking voters to raise TRL’s levy to 35 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
