Yelm government is vulnerable from multiple 2021 leadership changes,
Council hears ten Position 4 applicants tonight!

City of Yelm Applies for Additional Water Rights for Future Development - Thurston Economic ...

Council interviews 10 candidates for open seat – while other posts set for turnover

  • Ed. note: For the first time in 20 years, the leadership of the City of Yelm is undergoing massive changes in 2021, with the mayor retiring, 2 new department head appointments (Finance, Community Development), 5 potential city council position changes, and a new Planning and Building Manager. All of these changes place Yelm in a very vulnerable position, as the new people will take approx. a year to become fully conversant with their jobs. Will the city elect new councilors who do not have their allegiances aligned with what has been called “The Cabal” here, and we break 3-3 tie votes where the mayor chooses a new councilor, as an example?

+ Yelm’s City Council will interview 10 candidates tonight to fill out the term through December for the vacant Position 4.

+ Position 4 plus 3 other council positions are up for election this year, so change is a huge potential

+ Mayor Foster announced his retirement leaving the mayor’s seat up for election

+ The 4th Finance Director in Mayor Foster’s 5 year term began here yesterday

+ Community Development Director Beck announced his retirement for this summer

+ The Public Services Department has an opening for a Planning & Building Manager [Ed. note: There is no Public Services Department yet listed on the city’s website, however the Public Works and Community Development Depts. are being reorganized and merged, with Cody Colt as Director. Click here for the Job Description, which reports to new Public Services Dept. Director Colt.] Why would the city post a job in a new department when they have not previously notified the city council, the Planning Commission, nor the public of this reorganization?

+ Community Development’s Assistant Planner Casey Mauck was recently hired

A Yelm Community Blog commenter was very astute:

Why [does] the mayor continue to employ Michael Grayum through the hiring of a 3rd Finance Director, 3rd Public Works Director, And now a new Planning and Building Manager [in Community Development]. If statistics state that turnover cost (sic) 1.5 times the employees salary how can this be an effective management strategy? Why are so many high level employees “leaving for new employment”. This really makes me wonder about Joe Wolfe’s statement of a “toxic work environment” stated back in June of 2019. Has anyone asked other employees how they feel about going to work everyday? Is Michael Grayum fostering a negative environment and pushing employees out?
