Obama speaks out about Trump using the government against Ilhan Omar!

‘This is So Appalling’: Barack Obama Delivers Blistering Rebuke of Trump’s Ilhan Omar Deportation Plot

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president.”

Excerpt from Common Dreams:

Former President Barack Obama on Sunday spoke out against the Trump administration’s plot to strip Rep. Ilhan Omar of her US citizenship and remove her from the country.

In a lengthy social media post, Obama said the administration’s attack on Omar (D-Minn.) violates “a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say.”

Obama’s post came nearly one week after agents at the US Department of Homeland Security conducted a raid of Omar’s home. Days after the raid, the Wall Street Journal reported that the raid on Omar was part of an effort to build “a case to strip her of her US citizenship and ultimately deport her.”

“To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts,” Obama wrote. “Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.”

Obama noted that President Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar “as someone who he believes does not belong in this country,” and accused the president of seizing upon an “unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized” to carry out his deportation plot.

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” Obama wrote. “And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies—from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.”

Obama concluded by warning that letting Trump’s actions go unchallenged would set a terrible precedent that even the president’s allies could one day live to regret.

“If this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with [Omar],” Obama wrote, “or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”

What the DHS raid on Ilhan Omar’s home is really about

There are signs of desperation in the Trump administration’s new attack on the congresswoman.

Trump sees Omar as a convenient target for his white nationalist agenda.

Excerpt from MS.NOW:

The Department of Homeland Security raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home Monday morning is a shameful and shocking attempt to use the pretext of immigration enforcement to advance an extreme right-wing nationalist political agenda.

The notion that raiding the home of a congresswoman was necessary or may have been motivated by a good faith attempt to uphold the law is laughable. Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota, has been a U.S. citizen since 2000 — when she was 17 years old. According to Fox News, citing two sources close to the investigation, “the search stems from a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born congresswoman’s immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child.”

That this investigation is reportedly being spurred by a possible problem with paperwork filled out by her father when she was a child underscores how desperate the Trump administration was to scrounge something up.

Of course, that’s hardly the only tell that this was politically motivated. Why is this happening in October, just a few weeks before Omar is up for re-election?

As The Associated Press notes, “The Justice Department has historically sought to avoid public investigative actions involving a candidate within 60 days of a primary or general election.” That norm is observed precisely to avoid abusing the law enforcement power of the federal government for political purposes — and to avoid generating suspicions that legitimate investigations are political. That the Trump administration is choosing to shun that norm gives away the game. Furthermore the fact that since last year Trump has been saying he wants Omar out of the country and that he thinks she shouldn’t be allowed to serve in Congress is a clear signal about potential motives.

Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03): Trump betrayed our ally Ukraine, overwhelming will of Congress!

Official Portrait of Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D, WA-03).

Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) on Trump waiving sanctions on the sale of Russian oil

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct 17, 2026
Contact: mgppress@mail.house.gov
……
VANCOUVER, WA – Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) issued the following statement on the President’s decision to sign an Executive Order yesterday waiving the sanctions on the sale of Russian oil Congress passed in the bipartisan Lindsay O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026:
……
“The President’s decision to issue a waiver of the recently passed Russia sanctions package is a betrayal of our ally Ukraine, the overwhelming will of Congress, and the national interests of the American people.
……
If Trump were serious about bringing down prices at the pump, he would end this disaster in Iran. And using American tax dollars to fund Russia through his proposed oil purchase is a shameful farce.
……
I am already working with a group of bipartisan members to introduce legislation that will block the President’s ill-conceived plan to purchase Russian oil. Congress must now also take steps to ensure that the sanctions we voted for and the President signed into law are fully executed and implemented.
……
Instead of continuing to aid and abet Putin’s fascist aggression, the President should do everything in his power to support our ally Ukraine. He should fully implement the sanctions package and reverse course on his plan to buy Russian oil.
……
The administration also needs to do everything in their power to immediately force the reversal of the Starlink throttle. I’m hearing directly from my constituents that their grandparents are being maimed getting water from a well in the middle of the Donbas. In the next Congress, there will be significant consequences for those responsible for facilitating Putin’s crimes.”

Burrowing owls might soon be endangered in Washington state

Excerpt from Tacoma’s News Tribune via MSN:

The Washington State burrowing owl population has been declining for years. Development, sprawl, agricultural habitat loss and increased wildfires have worsened their survival in Washington to the point that the Washington Department of Wildlife (WDFW) is considering listing them as endangered.

On Friday[ Oct. 9], the WDFW announced it is seeking public comments on its official recommendation to list the burrowing owl as a state endangered species.

“While burrowing owls used to be present across much of Washington, they’ve since been eradicated from most of the state outside of the Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin,” Gerald Hayes, the WDFW burrowing owl specialist and lead author on the recent status report, said in a statement on Friday. “Today, we estimate that fewer than 100 breeding pairs can be found in Washington. Habitat loss and degradation are major contributors to the burrowing owl’s population decline in Washington.”

The public comment period is open through Dec. 31, 2026. People can submit written comments via email or by mail to Taylor Cotten, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, P.O. Box 43141, Olympia, WA 98504-3200.

After the public comment period, WDFW staff will brief the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission, which has the authority to approve or decline the department’s request to list the species as endangered. The commission is scheduled to consider the issue in February 2027.

WDFW says the western burrowing owl is the only breeding subspecies of burrowing owl in western North America. It was once found across Eastern Washington, but habitat loss and destruction have significantly impacted its population. Burrowing owls are usually found in Washington from early March through late September before migrating to California for the winter.

The burrowing owl is listed as endangered in Minnesota and threatened in Colorado and Florida. Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming list the burrowing owl as a species of concern. Washington now lists the burrowing owl as a species of greatest conservation need.

If you see a burrowing owl in Washington, the WDFW is asking the public to share their observations using this wildlife reporting form.

No eruption at Mount St. Helens; winds stir old ash

Excerpt from KPTV-12 TV News, Fox News, Portland via MSN:

There is no eruption at Mount St. Helens, scientists say, after strong ground winds picked up old ash near the mountain Thursday [Oct. 15].

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory issued a Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation at 1:01 p.m. PDT Thursday, keeping the aviation color code at green. The notice said a webcam showed resuspended ash reaching about 12,000 feet above sea level and moving northwest.

The observatory said it will issue a new notice if conditions change significantly or if the color code changes.

Midterm election voting underway here in Washington!

Voting underway in Washington for midterm election

Excerpt from The Washington State Standard:

The wait is over in Washington.

Washington’s 5.1 million registered voters are starting to cast ballots for the Nov. 3 general election, which could see Democrats strengthen their grip on power in the state Legislature and retake the majority from Republicans in Congress.

In theLegislature, where Democrats hold majorities in both chambers, all 98 seats in the state House and 24 of 49 in the state Senate are up for election.

Five of the nine state Supreme Court seats will be filled, giving voters a rare opportunity to pick a majority of the bench.

And all 10 congressional seats are on ballots. The race for the 3rd District in southwest Washington is drawing national attention because the outcome could help decide which political party controls the chamber in 2027. And the winner of the 4th District will succeed Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse, who is retiring.

Today, the Washington State Standard is publishing its voter guide for the unusually active off-year election.

There are responses to our surveys from all candidates for the Supreme Court as well as for 34 of the most competitive legislative contests and those two races for U.S. House seats.

======

State and county election officers are hoping voters will return their ballots, preferably by depositing them in one of Washington’s 594 designated drop boxes or casting them at one of 61 voting centers.

They’re cautioning about relying on the U.S. Postal Service. A recent rule change by the postal service does not guarantee ballots sent through the mail will be postmarked on the day they are put in the mail box.

Ballots should be mailed at least a week before election day to ensure they’ll be counted. If mailing within a week of Nov. 3, go in-person and request a manual postmark at the counter.

If ballots are not postmarked on or before Election Day, they will not count. More than 20,000 cast in the August primary were rejected because they came in too late.

Voters can sign up at VoteWA.gov to track their ballot and confirm it is received and counted.

‘No Kings’ IV coming to Olympia on Oct. 17

Excerpt from The JOLT News:

In what is being billed as a “Nationwide Day of Action,” local organizers are encouraging people to join in an effort to promote early voting ahead of the Nov. 3 General Election.

Olympia Indivisible and Evergreen Resistance are hosting “No Kings: Vote Early” in Olympia in concert with hundreds of events across the United States.

The local event is scheduled to begin with a ballot march drop from Lions Park at 800 Wilson St. SE in Olympia to the Thurston County Atrium Building at 3000 Pacific Ave. in Olympia.

The march is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. with an anticipated arrival time of 10:30 a.m. for a ballot drop, and then subsequent remarks by Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall.

A sign-waving event is scheduled to follow at the Washington State Capitol Campus from noon to 2 p.m.

The local event is part of what national No Kings organizers say is going to be a big effort to protect elections against sabotage and turn out the largest early vote in history.

“Our elections are under attack. On October 17th we defend our rights,” said No Kings organizers in a message posted on their website. “We’re fueling the largest early vote in the history of our Republic. Because in America, power belongs to the people — not wannabe kings.”
