“Impact fees on new development in unincorporated Thurston County will soon begin.

The Board of Thurston County Commissioners adopted Growth Management Impact Fees for Parks, Transportation and Schools in December 2012. The fees, according to John Tennis, public information program manager for the county, are intended to fund improvements necessary due the increase in new homes, students and traffic related to new development.

According to statistics from the Thurston Regional Planning Council, the countys population was about 250,000 in 2012,” added Thurston County Commission Chair Sandra Romero. “In just the next 8 years, that number is expected to exceed 300,000. That kind of growth will affect us all, and these fees will help us provide the kinds of parks, roads and schools that make this an attractive place to live and raise a family.

The fees, which go into effect on Tuesday, will be assessed at the time a completed building application is submitted to the Thurston County Permit Assistance Center and the fees will be collected at the time the Building Permit is drawn.”
