“The future of our community rests in the hands of one of our most vulnerable and cherished assets: our children. On Monday, April 22, join Commissioner Romero and her guest, Family Education and Support Services (FESS) Executive Director, Shelly Willis, for coffee, and learn how to foster resiliency around child abuse in our community.
Founding FESS in 2000, Shelly has over 28 years of experience working with children and families as an educator, advocate, and advisor. In addition to her non-profit work, she serves as adjunct faculty for South Puget Sound Community College, chairs the Washington State Kinship Oversight Committee, the Thurston County Parent Education Network, and co-chairs the Thurston Early Childhood Coalition. Shelly also participates on the Domestic Violence Task Force, Child Protection Team, Child Abuse Prevention Coalition, the Thurston Council on Children and Youth, and the Zonta Club of Olympia.
In 2011, Thurston County experienced a significant spike in cases of severe child abuse and neglect. While 2012 statistics showed a small decrease in cases, there is still concern about the elevated number of reports of children being harmed. In response to this increase, the Thurston County Child Abuse Prevention Task Force has partnered with the Thurston Council for Children and Youth to raise awareness of and identify preventative measures to reduce harm to children. On April 2, Thurston County Commissioners proclaimed April 2013 Child Abuse Awareness Month as part of a broader national campaign.
There is a lot happening in Thurston County and we want to hear from you!
These coffees give you the opportunity to talk about issues of concern, ask the Commissioner questions about the county, and share ideas.

Pastor Jeff Adams
Pastor Jeff Adams of Yelm’s Paramount Christian Church has always been critical of JZ Knight and Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment (RSE) since he arrived on-scene here in 2005. However, he crossed a line on April 17 in moving from his criticism to a personal attack and name calling, in which even one of his fellow Christians had an issue (see below).
Further, Pastor Adams’ denigration of JZ Knight was in error, as the Judith Knight referred is an RSE student and no relation to JZ Knight. In the Christian spirit, Pastor Adams should apologize to Ms. Knight.
Quoting Pastor Adams’ own Religious Column published in the Nisqually Valley News on Friday, April 30, 2010:

For someone who proclaims these words as his truth, yet continues to spout his negative views about our local School (RSE) and people he knows nothing about from first hand experience or investigation, these words ring hollow. This man has never accepted an invitation to visit RSE and knows nothing of the school, yet calls himself an authority based on listening to the diatribes of former disgruntled students?

Cherie McKale: The phrase “Ramtard” can be insulting to more than just JZ, or the students at the school. I myself, A devote disciple of Christ, happen to have a beautiful son who suffers with intellectual disabilities. And I find ANY use or paraphrase of the word “Retard” EXTREAML (sic) off color, uncreative, and offensive. I’m sorry if this upsets anyone in this thread, but I’m not sorry I feel this way. As “vocal” Christians, we must always be sensitive to the words we use. Words to build up, not tear down.
Stephanie Perkey Adams: I don’t usually jump in these threads but in Jeff’s defense of the term “ramtard” I will. We discussed this before he used it. In music there is a single symbol which means to “retard” or slow down the rhythm. If you google the word “retard” it first list the word used with 2 examples as a verb; followed by 3 examples used as a noun and the 2nd of which has 2 definitions, it does not always mean the word refers to those who are developmentally disabled. I work with such clients, their families and we have close friends touched with DD children/family. The word has many definitions, not just one and was not to at all be demeaning to anyone but the lying traitor known as Judith Zebra Knight aka Ramtha.

With the news in recent days on Sequestration cuts being permanent, every sector of the Yelm economy is going to take a “hit”, as the city has attracted an unusually large percentage of JBLM residents in recent years, who are going to feel sequestration’s efffects. With the recent news that Yelm’s 1st quarter retail sales lagged Thurston County, Tumwater, and Lacey and the recent announced closings here of retail giants Blockbuster video and Yelm True Value Hardware, caution and concern is in the air:

“Yelm Community Schools is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the School Board for Director District 1. The vacancy was created when board member Dave Pratt resigned his position effective April 30 due to moving out of the district. Mr. Pratt served on the school board since 2010.
The open position is for Director District 1 ( map / legal description ). Applicants must reside in District 1, which include the northwest part of the district extending toward the Lacey/Olympia area.
The school board will appoint a replacement to serve until the next general election in November 2013. At that time the position will be up for election for a full four-year term.
